I agree with both Toya and Lori. The creativity and fearlessness of children is mesmerizing. I’m reminded of an article I read a few years ago on CNBC.com, (Millionaire in training Published Tue, Sep10 2019 8:15 AM EDT Updated Mon, Jul13 2020 9:26 AM EDT). The article stresses the importance of fostering creativity as number one.

Contributor, Don Bossi, president of FIRST, a nonprofit organization that helps foster innovations by students K-12 in the fields of STEM is quoted as saying, “Kids are just a sponge. When you expose them to things like brainstorming and prototyping, they get it. They are almost naturals at it.”

FACTS: Earmuffs, the popsicle and the trampoline were all invented by children.

Google Drawings was fun! It was hard for me to pick 1 gif for the assignment! If anyone looks at the edit history, they'll see that I clicked on about 10 gifs before I settled on 1 lol. I think this would be a great tool to use on virtual learning days or as a hook at the beginning of a lesson.

  4. I made the innocent mistake of assuming our school k-12 was as "Google-fied" as my team members -- I learned there was quite a canyon between experiences. I believe the "Keeping up with Google" would be an essential part of PD for our staff -- ONGOING. We are a Google Network, and it makes sense to look inward and build the capacity around the table -- leverage staff who have Google Gifts and Talents to partner with those who are struggling to switch over or want to simply learn things comprehensively ---and have a resource such as this book as a guiding narrative ---I think it would be a smart move to bring us all to a similar understanding of the awesomeness of Google Apps

      Hi Kelly Hershey,
The district I am in partnership with utilizes Google however I am not sure if its to the full capacity of a Google Network. For my own learning and growth I am pursuing the Google certifications to keep my skills sharp while learning how to leverage this specific skillset professionally and personally. We have a few members of the team/staff that are Google certified and I would like to give them the opportunity to showcase their skillsets along with content to undergird those staff members who maybe new to this level of technology and Google specifically.

It is always interesting to see the variation in skills our colleagues have with Google and other tech resources, however what always floors me is the experience of our scholars. If all assignments could be submitted via TikTok, there would be no issues, but several really struggle to complete Google Documents or Forms (my school used Google Classroom for this last school year) even though they are of the age where these tools have always existed and been available to them. Not only do we need continuous PD on the full capabilities of Google, but our scholars need to be shown these as well.

      Delete
    4. @Toiya Davis : I use Google Classroom, Google Forms, Google Slides, and Google Jam board the most . Administratively I use Google Forms with Auto Notifications ALOT. This year I created a Google Sites Page with all the forms for the teachers, that would auto notify the person who it needed to go to --- For example, our staff found themselves consumed with communication. If a scholar was going to be absent -- they would have to tell the whole story to the homeroom teacher--- then the homeroom teacher would pass on an email to the office manager --- and it was messy --- with a google form with auto notify as soon as a parent or scholar would start to go down that road --- the teacher would send the form and keep class moving ...instead of taking time to process the information . Upon submission the office manager automatically received an email with PDF of scholar information , the reason for the absence , etc. For the classroom , I create interactive notebooks using google slides --- scholars love them. I always walk through the apps or programs with the scholars but set the expectation day one that we are a Google School and therefore this is what you will be using, etc. I also keep a google site for my scholars that has FAQ or How To's they can access

Social networking has made connecting across the globe a snap. “If you want to create a movement and make a difference in the world of education, all you need is the desire to do so.” Bell, p 54. Teaching and modeling positive content is a benefit to all. Stressing what you post online, stays online is an important topic to discuss.

I explored the resource, " How to Boost Your Teacher Brand". Last year, I tried this using Instagram. I established an account (artandmusicwithmrslaura) to showcase my students and their artwork. I added the THINK acronym to the Google Drawings. As educators, we've likely seen the THINK used similarly, but the slight shift in what the letters stand for is good for scholars with all the technology they are surrounded by.
I checked the Keeping Up with Google. I think it's important to set small goals when starting to explore the huge and sometimes overwhelming vastness of tools and resources available. Instead of trying to use everything all at once, pick a couple apps/tools/resources that you and your students will find the most engaging/useful for learning. Once you're comfortable with those, tackle a few more. And keep in mind, what works best for one may not be what's best for you. Which is why it's important to have that group of people you can learn from and bounce ideas off of.

I had never used Google Drawings until this assignment so the first thing I did was take a quick YouTube tutorial on the subject. Due to my knowledge of Google Classroom and Slides, it was very simple to navigate. I then used Google Images to find a photo which I learned how to upload straight to My Drive and then post to G-Drawings. I read “50 Educational Pinners You Should Follow on Pinterest” where I was pleased to find out that I am already following, Angela Watson (Teachers Pay Teachers), Clever Classroom, and Scholastic. Lastly, I created an account with Pinterest and choose to follow Shake Up Learning w/Kasey Bell and was surprised to receive a free digital copy of her book, ”Google Classroom Cheat Sheet for Teachers & Students.” Thank You! I also followed Janet Corder who offers digital learning workshops.
Chapters #10 highlighted the importance of teachers connecting to the world before connecting our classroom which lit a fire under me. Chapter #11’s take-a-way for me was written in the 1st paragraph which states, “The power of sharing your own unique voice & perspective cannot be oversold.”

It's taking little steps and goals with your scholars. I might just try different tools with certain groups as a practice groups and then expand. I have used google with the common tools especially google slides but setting a goal to use a new tools each semester will expand my understand of what's available. Here's to exploring Google!!

I totally get the struggle of not knowing what things are age appropriate for younger students. Some of the tools on google can get pretty complicated! It may just take longer to introduce these things or start by only introducing one aspect or tool and, over time, introducing more one by one. I can definitely still tell the benefit to students that these tools would have! And, if nothing else, finding tools that make our jobs easier or more effective can be so helpful, even if its not a computer skill we're teaching directly to our students.

On the google drawing, I added an image of a stack of hashtags, illustrating that social media is becoming ever more interconnected through hashtags. People are becoming more and more discoverable, and it is easier to get things out there that you may want to share. It can also be dangerous if there is information you do not want to share. This highlights the importance of me being aware of my online presence as well as educating my students on how to safely be on the internet.

As I was looking through the "50 Educators You Should Follow on Pinterest" article, I noticed that most of the educators listed were also plugged in on other platforms as well (teachers pay teachers, blog sites, etc). This furthers Kasey's point that getting well plugged in with other educators can really help us lift each other up, get great ideas for ourselves, and make education feel more life a community. I will definitely plan on looking up some of these people on Pinterest and build my online presence as a teacher more to experience those benefits!

This past year, my school used Google Classroom as its LMS and I am always trying to find ways to make it as much of a “one stop shop” for my scholars as possible. Additionally, I like that the different features can all be connected: due dates show up on calendar and meetings from my emails automatically are added and give me reminders. I think that teachers and scholars could benefit from having all of this information easily coordinated and could lead to better outcomes for everyone.

I think it is invaluable for us as teachers to share our passions with our scholars. This develops stronger relationships with our students and enhances learning, making content more exciting and engaging. If you are being yourself and sharing those passions in your instruction and modeling with technology, your students will have an impactful experience.

  26. In google drawings, the think acronym that causes one to pause before postings, asking ourselves is it kind, helpful, necessary, true, inspiring etc relates to the sentence of the text “this big world of ours is getting smaller”. (Ch 10, pg 53) in other words, everyone should pause before doing anything on social media, as our world as become very small from all of these platforms, so one should certainly pause before sharing and posting. As a media specialist, a part of digital citizenship that is taught in my classrooms are these guidelines, something all scholars (and adults) should always keep in mind. I greatly appreciate the author highlighting how necessary it is to use the guidelines, especially in the school environment that is becoming more and more digital.
